La Chine fait face à des défis de taille : comment nourrir la plus grande population mondiale quand on ne possède que 7% des surfaces cultivables de la planète ? En 2022, lors du 20e congrès du Parti communiste chinois, Xi Jinping prévenait : "Nous devons nous préparer à affronter une mer agitée." Pour surmonter les "dangereuses tempêtes" associées, la Chine cherche à réduire sa dépendance vis-à-vis de l’étranger. Alors que les restrictions américaines sur les exportations de composants stratégiques affectent de nombreux secteurs de son économie, Pékin investit massivement dans la tech et la production de semi-conducteurs en vue d’atteindre l’autosuffisance. En matière énergétique, au cœur des préoccupations depuis la guerre en Ukraine, le gouvernement déploie également d’importants moyens pour tendre vers l’autonomie. Au programme : augmentation de la production de charbon, nouvelles routes d’approvisionnement en pétrole et en gaz, développement accéléré de la filière nucléaire et investissements colossaux dans les énergies vertes. Autre sujet prioritaire renforcé par le conflit ukrainien : la sécurité alimentaire, le géant rouge au 1,4 milliard d’habitants ne possédant que 7 % de la surface cultivable de la planète. Tandis que des scientifiques développent une variété de riz hybride adaptée aux sols alcalins, le PCC soutient la recherche, en particulier sur les semences, et revoit sa politique d’importations, faisant du Brésil son premier partenaire agricole devant les États-Unis. Enfin, Pékin travaille d’arrache-pied pour imposer le yuan sur la scène internationale, et construire un système financier moins dépendant du dollar américain.

Du technopôle de Wuhan à la gigantesque usine d’hydrogène du Ningxia, ce documentaire singapourien dresse un état des lieux de la course à l’autosuffisance chinoise, qui s’est intensifiée ces dernières années, sur fond de rivalité commerciale et géopolitique accrue avec les États-Unis. Nourri d’analyses d’experts, il donne un aperçu des avancées en la matière ainsi que des obstacles qui se dressent toujours sur la route de Xi Jinping, et s’interroge sur les buts profonds de cette politique : la République populaire est-elle en train de se préparer à la guerre ?

Ben E. King performing Stand By Me, from the album Don't Play That Song!

"Stand by Me" is a song originally performed in 1961 by American singer-songwriter Ben E. King and written by him, along with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who together used the pseudonym Elmo Glick. According to King, the title is derived from, and was inspired by, a spiritual written by Sam Cooke and J. W. Alexander called "Stand by Me Father," recorded by the Soul Stirrers with Johnnie Taylor singing lead.

In 1960, Ben E. King was inspired to update the early 20th-century gospel hymn "Stand by Me" by Charles Albert Tindley, which was based on Psalm 46, "will not we fear, though the Earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea." According to the documentary History of Rock 'n' Roll, King had no intention of recording the song himself.

King had written it for the Drifters, who passed on recording it. After the "Spanish Harlem" recording session in 1960, King had some studio time left over. The session's producers, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, asked if he had any more songs. King played it on the piano for them. They liked it and called the studio musicians back in to record it.
